ing of a portion of the gland, generally the right lobe ; afterwards the whole thyroid body became implicated, and the enlargement somewhat indurated. Frequency of the pulse and palpitation of the heart, as recorded by Aitken, were not observed. In the early months of the regiment's stay at Baxa the disease often assumed an acute form, several men presenting themselves at hospital on the same morning, and stating that the goitre had come on during the previous fortnight. The native soldiers term the disease " ghegd"' and attribute its origin to the hardness of the drinking water, which in that canton-
